They're doing better than most these days, and they didn't take any bailout money to do it.

They actually still build a huge pile of shit. But truth told, everyone does lately. Nobody seems to remember any other mass recalls until the media jumps on someone's back with a sensationalism hard on. The people reporting this stuff don't know enough about automotive technology to pour piss out of a boot. :snooty:

I remember quite a few mass recalls, never on the current scale that GM is going at it, though. With another half a million or so announced today, I think they are trying to shoot the moon and actually recall more cars than they make! They've been tainted by public sector funds, so paradoxes such as that might actually be possible.

They're up to over 20 million recalls this year as of today. Their old record was 10 million for a year. This year isn't even halfway over, and they are only still scratching the surface of incompetence that is buried deep and goes back many years.

It breaks my heart, too. I've always been a GM guy and I hate to see them go this way. The news is even worse inside the industry, because GM dealers have known about all of this for a long time and they're eating a lot of crap now, even though they had nothing to do with it.

It won't stop me from building my Cutlass someday, of course.

It's 99% bullshit. GM has just been a huge target since the bailout scandal, which as we all know, has nothing to do with the brand, but rather corporate greed.

It's actually only about 33% bullshit and 66% arrogant incompetence, and it has everything to do with the brand.

Some of the recalls seem silly, like "vehicles with vinyl floors and vinyl floor mats can experience a slipping mat which could interfere with the pedals".

Really? Floor mats?

But the thing is - car makers know about all of these little nit-picky things way before we ever hear about them. Some of them care to avoid as many questionable quality decisions as possible and take great measures to avoid these things. GM has proven that as a BRAND, they just didn't care enough about what was going out of the door. Everything got hand-waved and passed down the line, and now the chickens are coming home to roost.
